"First News (of the Resurrection)"; three years in the "oven," so to speak

FIRST NEWS (OF THE RESURRECTION), 48" X 24," oil on canvas

Well here it is, the finished piece for "First News (of the Resurrection)," the piece I finished for the 9th International Church Art Competition, "Make Known His Wonderful Works," at the Museum of Church History and Art in Salt Lake City. I just packaged it off this week (no small feat nor with a painting 48" x 24" that it had to travel via freight), in hopes that it will make it past round 2 in the adjudication.

By way of explanation, I will quote what I included as my "Artist Statement"

"I am intrigued that the first witnesses of the Resurrected Savior were women, who arose early to go to the garden tomb that Easter morning to anoint the body of Jesus. They then beheld the angels telling them to go quickly to tell the disciples that He is risen. I wanted to depict that moment of anxious awe and wonder while they were on that errand, at the very first issuance of the glad news which would roll forth thenceforth and change the world. This painting is an homage to those women and indeed all the faithful women disciples who are often overlooked but play a great role in Christ's Church nonetheless."

This image and several versions of it have been banging around in my head for about 3 years and this is the final version, well... okay, maybe it one of the final versions of the idea. In short, the idea has been in there ever since they announced the theme for this triennial event, and in some ways, it kind of takes that long to prepare (at least it did for me), to filter down a subject matter of this magnitude, to funnel it into a single focused interpretation that is honest and true to a single vision.

Filtering was no small feat either because there are no shortcuts to the homework. There is no getting around the research; in my experience doing this competition for the past 12 years, I've learned that it takes steady spiritual preparation over a long period of time, to read, ponder & pray... to pray a lot... in and out of the studio and then some more, here a little, and there a little. I think that there is a misconception that I can pull biblical or spiritual images easily out of the air and presto, it appears on canvas effortlessly. (We are not talking about non-objective, abstract,  alla prima or plein air paintings, which you kind of do pull out of the air.) It is never that easy with this subject matter. That is not to say catalysts cannot happen to accelerate the process into a focused instant, but there is a process to the "arriving".

When the concept did come, the creation of this image, like so many others in my head, took time for it to develop, and frankly, it took time to be able to hit this project in earnest; everything from gathering resources, conceptual drawing, working with prelim models, actual models, doing photo shoots, and more photo shoots, and more pick-up photo shoots, then editing & compositing. And maybe that is why images can be cooking in my head for even a decade or more before I ever got to paint them. Having said that, there really is no shortage of the images, but rather... things stew there for a while, and it takes me a while to get to them. At any rate, I take it as a good sign that these images have not fallen by the wayside of whim since they have endured in my head that long and I still want to paint them. At least for me, this biblical series at has NOT fallen into the "been there, done that, that is so yesterday, and I have moved on" category. In short... expect to see more of it from me.

While this image took 3 years of cooking in the back of my mind, as it were, it took months of preparation, but my actual time behind the canvas painting really only took a matter of weeks. Yet, even after all the research and technical planning, drawings, photo shoots upon photo shoots, making some serious headway on canvas, even then, changes happen on canvas:

FIRST NEWS (early underpainting)

There are some very obvious things that I changed in the final painting from its original underpainting (see above), such as the woman-in-green, who originally carried the vessel (there is a hint of a vessel in her right arm), whereas the woman-in-blue (I guess we can call her Mary Magdalene) had nothing in her hands originally. That did not ultimately sit right with me. Therefore because of Mary Magdalene's preeminent mention in the gospels of being the first to behold the resurrected Savior, and her consistent mention in the gospels to be amongst a varying group of women (varying in number and name) who went to tell the disciples, she got the honor in my painting of carrying the sweet burial spices. Hence I changed that detail in the final, which opened up another technical can of worms, changing her gesture and the swing of her drapery all together.

Another item I took out was that rise in the earth in the foreground in front of Mary Magdalene... not sure why as I still think it is kind of cool, but, I think I will put that element in another version of the painting. I like that perspective of women running down a slope which dips into a rise. But in this image, my reasoning for taking it out is that it cut off the flow in Mary Magdalene's movement, especially since I changed her gesture to holding the vessel. In addition, the more time goes on, I have an irresistible urge to flatten and pull out my graphic edges, which also might account for the disappearance of the rise. Taking out the rise makes it flatter. (Can you tell I like flat and graphic?)

The woman-in-green got a makeover completely, her angle and everything. It became more frontal and chin up. In addition, the woman-in-red's drapery completely changed shape. Sometimes I change elements because I have reassessed the graphic impact of an element may look good on paper, but on canvas on a large scale, sometimes, things change. Or sometimes, it just isn't working or flowing. And then eventually, I change it.

I also changed the womens' head-bands to white as opposed to being the same color as the outer veil. In my estimation, it would be more consistent for women of humble clothing to wear simple un-dyed cloth on there heads everyday; it eventually kind of struck me as silly to depict them so perfectly color coordinated, like they hit the same sale at the veil outlet or something with the same headcloth with matching headband for 1/2 off, but in different color variations (sorry, I am chuckling at this).  While it looked cool, all my research into reconstruction of biblical clothing eked out my inclinations to have them so smartly coordinated; hence the white headbands.

The process really would not be complete if I did not mention that I did have my share of artistic epiphanies during this painting process which can happen from time to time, but is along the rarer side of things. Painting, on good days will flow and fly; nevertheless, it can also be technically excruciating at times when some elements are not coming together. And as always, as I had mentioned, prayer is key, praying for a clear mind to solutions. But epiphanies are beyond flowing, the answers to prayer, where solutions become so simple and clear but so profound nonetheless; they can be life-changing solutions that completely change my approach and workflow. Those are bigger "aha" moments. One such solution came in a moment about how to lay down color more efficiently. It changed significantly the way I work. Another moment came in the simple solution of making sure I have the right kind of magenta or violet on my palette. For some reason it solved a lot of issues. Another one was to stick to a certain kind of brush for the majority of the painting. I still work that way now. (Is this too boring and technical for all you non-painters?) These solutions may seem simple and small, but they had a huge impact on how I work.

Moreover, this image, "First News (of the Resurrection)" for me represents 3 years of a lot of pondering, praying, preparation, praying, pain, praying, process, praying, panic (when we talk of deadlines), praying and... I am running short of "p" words... um... e-phinanies... (sorry, that was a stretch) praying and... oh yeah... painting.

NEW VIDEO- From Drawing Studies to Finished Paintings: "The Early Life of the Savior, a Mother's Perspective"

In this video, see a progression of my conceptual drawings which led to the finished paintings in my ongoing series "the Early Years of the Savior, a Mothers Perspective," of which the drawings began over 20 years ago (about 1988), although I did not begin painting the images in earnest until about 2003, slow that they may have been to completion (being a busy full-time mom of four children, painting was sporadic at best when the kids were younger). The series has been "cooking" for so long, so to speak, and has had such resonance in my life as a mother that images still keep coming and I well may continue to produce images in the series for the rest of my life. Special thanks go to my talented nephew, Adam Augustine for composing the music for this video short, to Jessica Siswick for helping with the editing and to the models which have featured in my paintings over the years: Raquel Machado Ward, David Sturdevant, Jack Faradjian and Sam Larsen. Flight into Egypt (or Flight II) is SOLD, to hang in the Guest Home for Stockholm Sweden Temple Patrons

A correction and amended post: The original of Flight into Egypt (also known as Flight II) has been to sold by the Flagship Deseret Book on Temple Square to hang  in the Guest Home for the Stockholm Sweden patrons traveling to the Temple, (not in the Temple proper itself). It will remain in the Guest Home as its permanent home. It's buyer was not from the Temple Presidency. Just setting the record straight.

I am posing with Raquel Machado Ward, the model for Mary, in front of the painting Flight into Egypt (Flight II) at the Flagship Deseret Book on Temple Square, March 26, 2011.

This was a new experience for me, the first time consigning an original to Deseret Book. The client then requested that the painting be removed from the stretcher and rolled for transport on a plane to Sweden where it will be reframed. Luckily, Deseret Book handled all the details on that end.

Being the guest artist at Deseret Book's Lunch and Learn was such a positive experience, making lots of print sales and making my goal to sell at least one original (the other original I brought out is Five That Were Wise), that I am looking forward to returning in August 2011 for a similar guest appearance.

The funny tidbit behind this painting is that even though it is named Flight II, it was really the first attempt at the subject matter, while the second attempt (square version) just entitled Flight, which is the more recognizable version, is the one entered into to the last International Church Art Competition and the one to receive the Purchase Award and is now owned by the Museum of Church History and Art. I really had not intended on showing this piece very seriously anywhere.

But I guess that for some reason, something about the theme perhaps has resonance with its viewers, which I think is in no small part due to a wonderful model, Raquel Machado Ward who makes an engaging Mary whose face draws in the viewer. She is Brazilian, actually, but has a great ethnic look, which is why I selected her. She has been my model for Mary for at least 10 years.

"Fulfill the Vision" Fine Art Exhibition at the DC Temple write up on Meridian MAgazine

There is a new write up today on Meridian Magazine about the "Fulfill the Vision Fine Art Exhibition" at the Washington DC Temple. The show opened Jan 29th and runs through March 27th. Check out the link to see the article along with images and artist interviews.

I entered three of the following pieces in the show, Weathering Autumn, White Apple Gatherer and Five That Were Wise. I just completed my newest piece in time for the show, Weathering Autumn, from my Adam & Eve series.

Weathering Autumn, oil on canvas, 2011

White Apple Gatherer, oil on canvas, 2010

"Five That Were Wise," oil on panel, 2009

I might add that I set myself up for a challenge with an arched format on Weathering Autumn, having thus to custom build a frame for the piece in the short space of a week. Although more simple in principle (grim laughter here) than building the frame for Five that Were Wise, I had to reacquaint myself with the workings of a router, plus learn so new tricks in a big hurry. The frame was a beast about 60" x 48" (36" x 48" artwork size), having to build it outside over the course of a week on some of the coldest days in January (it was too big to maneuver in my workshop space), the learning curve (you can troubleshoot a lot by watching youtube carpentry videos) and the cold slowing me down a bit, but it was well worth it. I now know how to build arched frames, plus have the tools to build it. Would I venture in this enterprise again soon? Not until I sufficiently recover from the memory and upheaval of that process and remove the permanent chill from my bones, but it is a bit like having children; in the pain of the moment you wonder who in their right mind would willingly go through it more than once, and then you find yourself having more (total of 4 kids in my case). Ah, what we do for art...

New Small Piece: "Clarion Call"

Here is a small piece I just finished for the SVU Fundraising Gala entitled "Clarion Call," oil on canvas, 20" x 30."

Of course, I dithered on the title for a while. "Moroni" was the obvious choice, but I thought another title, "I saw another angel fly," might be more in tune with the inspiration for the piece, but my husband thought that was too wordy for a title. So I settled for "Clarion Call" because it needs to communicate the heralding of this last dispensation. If anyone has a vote on a better title, PLEASE DO COMMENT.

Mormon Times Article and other crazy stuff

If things could not get any more surreal, I found out this morning on Facebook from my friend Wayne Fagg (thanks, Wayne!) that an article entitled LDS Artist Surprised at Huge Response to Ad Campaign ran this morning in the Mormon Times (see left). I must be the last to find out about these things.

Talk about surprised; I thought it was going to be a little blurb along with comments from the other mormon.org video participants. I was wrong apparently...

The article is in response to the video and ad campaign on Mormon.orgIt has been crazy enough finding yourself on billboards and TV ads and news clippings as part of the new ad campaign for the new face, voice for the new mormon.org .

Drawing the Diplomats- The Annual Western Family Picnic, Public & International Affairs Event for the Church

Every year for nearly the past 10 years, I have been working at the Annual Western Family Picnic, hosted by the Public and International Affairs Office for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the Marriott Ranch in Hume, VA, located in the breathtakingly beautiful rolling hills of the Shenandoah. This year, the event fell on September 11th, a National Day of Service. All the International Embassies, staff and their families are invited to this event by the Church as an expression of goodwill to the countries for whom much of the Church's Humanitarian efforts are made and as an expression of thanks for hosting many of our missionaries in their country. This year was a record breaking year with nearly 40 Embassies represented and several hundred attendees. For the past 10 years, my job at the event has been that of a portrait artist for the dignitaries. Three other artists joined me this year: Jonathan Linton Lester Yocum, and Tai Hemleniak.

A Surreal Month!

Dear readers,

I am absolutely floored by the response of so many of you as well as the sheer number of hits on my blog since the video on Mormon.org came out in July. Thank you for all of your kind emails and comments! I hardly know how to take it in.

What has been the most surreal are the number of unexpected random hits on my blog from all over the world, according to my blog stats, which all of a sudden went from a handful to the thousands. Um... I keep saying, "Is this really happening to me?" From the US to Canada, to China to Brazil, from Germany to UK, from Ireland to Thailand, from New Zealand to India, from Sweden to the Philippines, from Slovakia to Armenia, from Turkey to yes, my first hit in Kenya this evening! (Of course the stats do not tell you if someone stumbles upon you by accident.)

Who would have thought this obscure little painter in Ashburn, Virginia would have a readership in Kenya or Slovakia, or Armenia? Whoa, I am, um... kind of speechless....

From the bottom of my heart, I thank all of you for your interest. And I do hope I am keeping you interested... but I am kind of new to having an identifiable audience of any kind. This kind of raises the bar for me to do a better job at updating my blog. I am overwhelmed by requests for prints of my work and am working feverishly to make them available on my website THIS WEEK at the
Art of Rose Datoc Dall. So stay tuned!

For those of you who have not checked it out, the video is at
Rose Datoc Dall on Mormon.org or at Rose Datoc Dall on Youtube.

Stay tuned!

Study of Mary for "Mary with Boy Christ"

This image above is a drawing study done back in 2008, although the idea for this painting of "Mary with Boy Christ"has been banging around my head since 1988. I have since revisited the concept again and below is the current oil study, done Feb 2010. I hope to retain some of its looseness in the final painting.
The oil study above is of Raquel Machado as Mary, my perennial Mary model. Although Raquel lives in Utah and since I in Virginia, this oil study is based on a lifelike clay maquette, 50% human scale of Raquel. I use maquettes in many these serial paintings with the same figure. The maquette has captured my model of Raquel in time, when I first had her model for me 8 years ago. I was rather happy with the immediacy and fluidity of the image above.

Alla Prima Oil Study of Live Model, "Alex"

This is an oil study done from a live model, Alex. It is an exercise in "alla prima" painting, in other words, completing a painting from a live session, roughly 3-4 hours. I did take it home and do some touch-ups, but it is mostly "all prima."
